When calculating diets for dairy cows in organic farming, special requirements must be considered. For example, a forage proportion of at least 60% must be maintained in the ration and organic dairy farmers are meant to feed mainly gras in summer. Therefore, making the most out of the forages is of major importance. In addition, the supply of protein can be a particular challenge, as the availability and the affordability of protein feed is not always given in organic dairy farming. A well balanced rumen is therefore even more important, as this is the only way to make optimal use of the forages and to synthesize sufficient microbial protein.
